Your DV360 YouTube Audience Expansion Settings Stop Working July 15

Here's What to Do Before Then.

If you are running that use Audience Expansion, you have a hard deadline coming up that requires manual action. Unlike most platform migrations, this one will not fix itself. If you do not act before July 15, your campaigns will not automatically switch to the new approach. They will simply lose the reach expansion you have been relying on.

Here is the timeline you need to know.

June 15 — Lookalike Audiences launch for Video Reach Campaigns and Video View Campaigns. The new feature is available and you can begin applying it.

July 15 — Legacy Audience Expansion settings become read-only. You can no longer edit or apply them.

August 15 — Audience Expansion is fully removed from DV360.

The critical detail is the word read-only. Starting July 15 you cannot update your existing Audience Expansion settings. If your campaigns are still running on the legacy setting at that point, they will stay that way until August 15 when the feature is removed entirely. At that point your reach expansion disappears and your campaigns will serve only to your seed audience unless you have already applied Lookalike Audiences.

What Lookalike Audiences actually are

Lookalike Audiences in DV360 are not a direct replacement for Audience Expansion in terms of how they work, even though they serve the same strategic purpose of extending reach beyond your core audience.

Audience Expansion was a simple toggle. You turned it on and the platform found users similar to your seed audience automatically with limited control over how aggressively it expanded.

Lookalike Audiences give you more control. They use advanced semantic similarity modeling to find users who resemble your seed list. Key differences from the legacy feature include automatic exclusion of your seed list from the lookalike pool so you are not wasting impressions on people already in your core audience, reusable lists that can be applied across multiple line items and campaigns, and scale controls that let you set expansion levels up to 10%.

The additional control is genuinely useful. But it also means the migration is not passive — you need to build the lists, apply them to your line items, and make scale decisions before July 15.

What to do before July 15

Start by identifying every DV360 YouTube line item that currently uses Audience Expansion. Pull a list of those line items now and note the seed audiences they are using.

For each one, build a corresponding Lookalike Audience in DV360 using the same seed list. Review the scale settings and decide how aggressively you want to expand — the default is not always right for every campaign goal.

Apply the new Lookalike Audiences to the relevant line items before July 15. Do not wait until the last week. If you have a large number of line items or complex campaign structures, the transition will take longer than you expect.

Once the new audiences are applied, monitor reach and impression volume closely in the first two weeks. Lookalike Audiences may perform differently from Audience Expansion even with the same seed list because the underlying modeling approach is different. Give the new audiences time to learn but flag any significant reach drops early.

The bigger picture

This migration is part of a broader pattern in DV360 — the platform is moving away from simple on-off controls and toward more sophisticated audience tools that offer more precision but require more intentional setup. Lookalike Audiences are genuinely better than Audience Expansion for most use cases. The scale controls and automatic seed exclusion alone make them more useful.

But better tools only help if they are applied correctly and on time. The teams that will be hurt by this change are not the ones who understand Lookalike Audiences — they are the ones who have Audience Expansion running quietly in the background and have not yet noticed the July 15 deadline.

Check your YouTube line items this week. The setup is not complicated but the window to do it correctly is closing.
