Search Ads Are Becoming Conversations. Here Is What That Actually Changes.

The search ad has looked roughly the same for twenty years. A headline, a description, a URL. Someone searches, Google matches the query to relevant ads, the ad appears, the user clicks or does not. The format has been optimized relentlessly but the fundamental structure has been stable.

AI Mode is changing that structure. Not gradually, not at the margins, but at the level of what an ad fundamentally does. And for advertisers running Search campaigns through SA360, understanding what is different now rather than after the format becomes the default is worth the time.

What AI Mode Ads actually are

Google’s AI Mode is a conversational search experience powered by Gemini. Instead of returning a list of links, it generates a response to a query, synthesizes information, and guides the user toward a decision. Ads in AI Mode are not static headlines matched to keywords. They are dynamic experiences that adapt to the specific context of what someone is asking.

In practice: Gemini matches advertiser inventory and creative to highly specific, long-tail search intents in real time, adapting the ad to the nuance of the query rather than serving a pre-written headline that approximates relevance. Someone searching for a specialist service does not get a generic ad. They get something that responds to what they actually asked.

There is also a native checkout component. For eligible advertisers, AI Mode can surface personalized offer bundles and enable purchase directly within the ad experience, without the user navigating to a separate page. Google reports that 75% of users in AI Mode make faster decisions. That is the number they are leading with, and it is worth thinking about what it means: faster decisions are not always better decisions for the advertiser, but they are almost always better for conversion rates.

What this changes for how campaigns work

The most significant shift is in what the ad is doing. A traditional search ad captures intent and redirects it. Someone searches, clicks, lands on a page, converts or does not. The ad is a door.

An AI Mode ad can engage with intent directly, answering questions, bundling offers, and in some cases completing the transaction, all within the ad unit itself. The door has become a room.

For advertisers this pulls in two directions at once.

The opportunity is higher conversion quality. If someone researching a complex purchase gets their specific questions answered within the ad experience, they arrive at the decision point more informed and more ready to act. Google frames this as driving higher-quality leads rather than higher volume. Fewer clicks but more of them from people who are already close to a decision. For categories where lead quality is the problem rather than lead volume, that is a meaningful distinction.

The challenge is creative and measurement. Static ad copy written for keyword matching does not map cleanly onto a conversational format where Gemini is adapting the message in real time. Advertisers who rely on tightly controlled copy will find that control works differently here. And measuring what the ad actually did, including the interactions that happened within the experience before any click, requires thinking about attribution differently than a standard last-click or even data-driven model. The signals exist. The frameworks for interpreting them are still being built.

What to do with this now

AI Mode Ads are live for eligible advertisers in SA360. There is not yet a settled playbook for building campaigns specifically for the format. What there is: a clear sense of where it fits and where it does not.

The advertisers who will get the most from AI Mode are the ones whose products or services involve a genuine research process before purchase. Complex decisions, high consideration categories, situations where specific questions matter before someone commits. For those advertisers, a format that can engage with the specificity of a query rather than approximate relevance through keyword matching is a better fit than anything that has existed before in Search.

For advertisers selling simpler products where search intent is already close to transactional, the incremental value over standard Search is less clear. The format is built for complexity. Applying it to simple transactional queries is not where it earns its keep.

If AI Mode Ads are available for your accounts, run it alongside standard Search rather than replacing it. Give it categories where the research process is real, measure conversion quality not just conversion volume, and evaluate whether the difference justifies the creative investment. The format is different enough that it deserves a genuine test rather than an assumption in either direction.
