DV360 Is Taking Control of Your Creative Rotation on August 12

Are You Ready?

If you manage Display and Video 360 campaigns and have not yet looked at your creative rotation settings, August 12 is a date worth putting in your calendar.

On that date, DV360 will deprecate manual creative rotation settings for display and video line items. What that means in practice is that the platform will take over creative rotation decisions automatically — and it will make those decisions based on your line item’s bidding goal, not your manual configuration.

This is not a small change. It is a structural shift in who controls how your creatives rotate, and for teams that use manual rotation intentionally, it has real implications for campaign performance and creative testing.

What is actually changing

Right now, DV360 gives you four creative rotation options: even rotation, optimized rotation, sequential rotation, and fixed rotation. Experienced traders use these deliberately — running even rotation to collect clean performance data across creatives, using sequential rotation to control the order in which a user sees ads, or using fixed rotation to guarantee a specific creative serves on every impression.

After August 12, those manual settings will no longer be available for display and video line items. The platform will automatically align creative rotation with whatever bidding goal you have set. If you are maximizing conversions, DV360 will rotate toward the creative it believes drives the most conversions. If you are optimizing for clicks, it will rotate toward the highest click-through rate creative. If you are using fixed bidding or impression-based goals, it will rotate evenly.

Existing line items will migrate automatically on August 12. You do not need to do anything for the migration to happen — which is exactly why this change is easy to miss until after it has already affected your campaigns.

Why this matters for teams that use manual rotation deliberately

The automatic alignment with bidding goals sounds reasonable on the surface. If you want conversions, the platform rotates toward the conversion-driving creative. What is the problem?

The problem is that manual rotation settings serve purposes beyond bidding optimization. There are several common situations where automatic rotation will work against you.

Creative testing. The most common reason teams use even rotation is to collect statistically comparable performance data across multiple creatives before optimizing toward a winner. If DV360 starts rotating toward the perceived winner before you have enough data to trust that judgment, your test is compromised. You may end up scaling a creative that only appeared to perform better because it received more early impressions.

Sequential storytelling. Some campaigns are designed to deliver creatives in a specific order — an awareness ad followed by a consideration ad followed by a conversion ad. Sequential rotation is what makes that possible. After August 12 the platform will not honor that sequence if it conflicts with the bidding goal.

Brand and compliance requirements. Some clients or campaigns require specific creatives to serve at specific times or frequencies for brand, legal, or compliance reasons. Manual rotation is often the mechanism that enforces those requirements. Automatic rotation will not.

Holdout testing. Analysts sometimes use fixed rotation to maintain a holdout group — guaranteeing that a specific control creative serves at a consistent rate to enable fair comparison. This is no longer possible after the change.

What you should do before August 12

The first step is an audit. Go into your active DV360 line items and document which ones are using manual rotation settings and what logic those settings are serving. For each one, ask whether the rotation goal is aligned with the line item’s bidding goal. If it is, the migration will likely not cause a problem. If it is not — if you are using manual rotation for testing, sequencing, or compliance reasons — you need a plan before August 12.

For creative testing, consider front-loading any tests you need clean data from before the deadline. Finish the test, make the decision, and move into optimization before the platform takes over.

For sequential campaigns, explore whether DV360’s frequency management and audience segmentation tools can replicate the sequential logic you currently achieve through rotation. This will require more setup but it is achievable.

For compliance and brand requirements, work with your legal and brand teams now to document what is required and identify alternative enforcement mechanisms — whether through placement exclusions, audience segmentation, or campaign structure.

For holdout testing, consider whether you can replicate the holdout logic at the campaign or insertion order level rather than the line item level.

The broader pattern worth noting

This change is part of a consistent direction in DV360 — the platform is progressively moving control away from manual configuration and toward algorithm-driven automation. Creative Rotation follows the same logic as Smart Bidding, automated budget allocation, and audience expansion. The platform’s argument is that the algorithm makes better real-time decisions than manual settings can.

That argument is often true at the impression level. The algorithm has access to signals that no human can process in real time — user behavior, device context, inventory quality, time of day, and dozens of other variables that influence whether a given creative will perform on a given impression.

But the algorithm optimizes for the goal you have given it, not for all of your goals simultaneously. Manual rotation settings exist precisely because experienced traders have goals that go beyond the primary bidding objective — testing integrity, sequential storytelling, brand compliance, measurement validity. When those settings are removed, those goals need to be served by other means or they will not be served at all.

The teams that will be most affected by August 12 are the ones who have not yet thought through which of their manual rotation settings are there for a reason and which are just defaults that were never updated. Now is the time to find out.

What to do this week

Audit all active DV360 line items for manual creative rotation settings. Flag any that are using even, sequential, or fixed rotation for a deliberate purpose. Assess whether that purpose will be served by automatic rotation aligned to the bidding goal. If not, build a transition plan before August 12.

The change happens automatically. Your preparation should not.
